Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee

Charges:

• Develop an inaugural demographic survey for WNAR members (see survey disclaimers)
• Coordinate Indigenous student travel awards
• Host a satellite workshop annually in conjunction with the WNAR meeting for students (see summaries of past workshops)

• Develop recommendations about how WNAR can improve JEDI efforts

Past Events

• WNAR 2026 Expanding Opportunities Workshop, June 12-14, 2026. This workshop emphasized mentorship and belonging in quantitative fields as well as provided an enriching college experience for local middle and high school students from the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. Students engaged with youth researchers and a variety of (bio)statistics and data scientist graduate students and professionals. This workshop was funded in part by Pizza Perfection.

• WNAR 2026 Invited Session "Statistical Storytelling: Lessons from youth-centered studies". June 15, 2026. Organizers: Laura Kaizer and Natalie Gasca. 

• WNAR 2026 Invited Session "Pipeline programs in STEM: Best practices and development guidance". June 15, 2026. Organizers: Natalie Gasca and Laura Kaizer.

• WNAR 2025 Expanding Opportunities Workshop, June 15-16, 2025. This workshop focused on connect undergraduate students interested in quantitative fields with professional (bio)statisticians and data scientists in academia, government, and industry. Students from historically underrepresented groups were especially encouraged to apply. This workshop was funded in part by CANSSI with support from NSERC.

• WNAR 2024 Diversity Workshop, June 9, 2024: This workshop focused on connecting underrepresented students interested in quantitative areas with professional (bio)statisticians in academia, government, and industry. The target audience included undergraduate and graduate students from historically underrepresented groups. This workshop was funded in part by CURE Epilepsy and SAS.
